Progress 09/01/16 to 12/31/19
Outputs Target Audience:Livestock producers in southeast Nebraska. Changes/Problems:We were unable to meet a few of our goals which included making the Silencer tilt chute portable. This was not possible as movement of the chute would have resulted in unsafe working facilities for staff and livestock. We didn't get a letter out to surrounding veterinarians letting them about our new restraint capabilities but I was able to call them and give them information about our new equipment. Due to in the increased demand for services and ability to provide them I did not have the time to promote our reproductive services at Husker Harvest days during the grant period. I did end up providing over 50 embryo flushes and over 100 transfers of embryos some of which were by laproscopic AI. However, cervical AI in small ruminants presented as a much more demanded service in the area and Laproscopic AI by itself without embryo transfer didn't prove as demanding for our area. We have offered canine laproscopic AI services at the clinic but have failed to provide the service to any clients at this time as a board certified theriogenologist is available to our clients within 60 miles and I advice my clients to take advantage of their expertise if they are able to. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided? We have high school, undergraduate and veterinary doctorate students visit our facilities. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?Newspaper, Social media, producer meetings, What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?

Impacts What was accomplished under these goals?
Town & Country Veterinary Clinic P.C. is now serving a 60 mile service area in southeast Nebraska this a 20 mile expansion, which accomplished my first goal. We have started a satellite practice during the time in which we had this grant due to additional income that was generated from a second mobile veterinary practice. This second mobile veterinary practice allowed us to double our farm call service in the first 3 years of operation. We have been able to increase our active clients by 12% since 2016. I was able to expand veterinary services to include laproscopic AI, embryo transfer, small ruminant pregnancy diagnosis, and small ruminant AI during this time. With the additional expansions this allowed for additional income. The additional income allowed me to hire another associate, which helped me reach my goal of continuing to provide the high quality diagnostic services, foot care, and the ability to increase efficiency. This addition allowed me to serve more livestock per year, and continue to provide the sought after reproductive services of the community and region. The impact of this grant on southeast Nebraska is significant. Given the funds provided to our clinic we were able to advance the quality of livestock in the area through advanced reproductive services. We were also able to provide more on farm services to the producers of the area providing them with increased efficiency and quality of life for their livestock, especially during emergency situations. This increase in efficiency and impact on the livestock welfare and longevity were surely seen as a financial success to the livestock producers of our area. My first goal is to continue providing high quality diagnostic services. I was able to achieve this objectives by purchasing new equipment that was getting ready to fail in our practice at the beginning of this grant. The grant funds allowed for the purchase of this equipment as well as equipment that enabled me to set up a second mobile veterinary practice. By freeing up funds that were set aside to purchase new equipment I was able to hire another large animal practioner. We were able to advertise the new technology and importance of its use through social media, newspaper announcements, and annual producer meetings. These changes allowed for us to increase our our farm call service during the grant period by 100%. I was able to increase our imaging services by 34% during the grant period. During the grant period we increased the number of services provided by 20%. We increased our service radius by 20 miles. With additional time provided for me to learn new skills I visited ISU and learned new information about laproscopic AI for small ruminants. I was able to expand veterinary services to include laproscopic AI, Embryo transfer, and small ruminant AI during this time.

Outputs Target Audience:We published a press release to 9 local newspapers within a 90 mile radius. We held a producer meeting for our cow/calf clients and discussed our new services and farm call services. I have spoke on 3 occasions at local high schools. I helped couch the FFA Veterinary Science team this year and talked about our new services. We discussed our new services at the Southeast Cattlemans ball. I personally called our current sheep and goat clients and informed them of our new services. Changes/Problems:The tilt chute is to wide to accomadate making it portable, it won't be legal to pull down the highway. My plan is to utilize it at the clinic and use my existing chute as the portable chute to help accomadate farm call service. The funding to build an alleyway is not currently available for someone else to build so my husband and I plan to build it this summer so we can start utilizing it for hoof care. The chute just arrived 3 weeks ago. What opportunities for training and professional development has the project provided?I currently have 4 high school student interested in bovine, sheep and goat medicine. She has been shadowing me and my associate with these services and I was able to have her help me with the goat artificial inseminations. I have also spoke at 4 differentschools 6different times. I helped coach the FFA veterinary science team and was able to help them learn about livestock. I am scheduled to give a lecture to Southeast Nebraska FFA advisors on how to teach veterinary medicine to their students for class and compeitition. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?I have used social media to promote our progress with livestock reproductive services. I have also been able to attend Southeast Cattlemans ball and discuss the new services. We also held a producers meeting for our clients to discuss our new services and advancements in technology. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?I plan to continue promoting the services so we can start increasing gross. My sheep and goat ultrasound as well as my laproscopic artificial insemination, and embryo transfer in all speciesare at the point where I feel I can charge full price for them so I plan to start increasing gross. The chute is at the clinic but I plan to get it implemented within the next year.
